EGG protein for bodybuilding

Posted by greathealth on February 6, 2007

Egg is truly a complete food, and is usually used as a standard against which other protein foods are measured. The egg white usually contains the protein, and most egg protein supplements contain egg white. In addition, most egg white powders contain vitamins riboflavin, B12 and biotin, pantothenic acid, along with some sodium and pottasium.

The majority of egg protein powders available commercially do not contain added sugar, which is therefore, beneficial for Strength training for diabetics. There may also be added natural enzymes like papain and bromelain, which makes it easier for the body to digest the protein.

Since egg protein is absorbed much slower than, say, whey protein, it is ideal for getting a constant rate of absorption through the day.

Why you need to take a multivitamin supplement

Clearly, most foods that are available today is nutritionally deplete. Most vegetables and fruits contain Food pesticides, and are potentially dangerous in the long run. Also, the 50-year old recommended daily allowance (RDA) guideline for vitamins and minerals is clearly outdated, and may not be adequate, for say, a very active individual like an athlete; Book review: What Your Doctor Doesn’t Know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You.

In order to get an adequate intake of all vitamins and minerals, you need to take huge servings of rice/ bread/pasta or huge servings of different fruits and vegetables, which is not possible for the average Joe, unless one is living in the Amazon jungle!  That is why it makes sense to take multivitamin & mineral supplements that includes antioxidants and has more than the RDA.

Much ado about probiotics

Posted by greathealth on February 3, 2007

probiotics.jpg Probiotics are no doubt very useful in maintaining the normal gut flora, but the high claims of companies producing such probiotic supplements may be just much ado about nothing. They claim that probiotics offer health benefits like protection against colon cancer and numerous other disorders. But these claims are yet to be clinically validated. Moreover, one has to take these supplements constantly to keep the flora “healthy.”

In short, it is wise to include foods like yogurt in the diet, which is an inexpensive and effective way to maintain a healthy flora.
